Driving to Tenerife from Europe: A Guide to the Epic Ferry Journey (and Why It’s Not for Everyone)

It’s a fascinating idea: load up your own car (and maybe your bike) and drive from Italy, Germany, or the UK all the way to Tenerife. No luggage limits, the comfort of your own vehicle, a “road trip” adventure that crosses a continent and an ocean.

Is it possible? Absolutely.

Is it worth it? For a one or two-week cycling holiday, the answer is almost certainly no.

It’s an epic journey, more akin to moving house than a holiday transfer. It requires time, planning, and a considerable budget. Let’s analyze the stages of this modern-day odyssey from Italy and Northern Europe to understand what it really involves.

Stage 1: The Overland Journey. Destination: Southern Spain

The first thing to know is that there are no direct ferries from Italy (or Northern Europe) to Tenerife. The only embarkation point for the Canary Islands is mainland southern Spain.

Your first objective, therefore, is to reach the ports of Cádiz or Huelva, in Andalusia.

  • From Italy (e.g., Milan): This is a road trip of about 2,000-2,300 km. We’re talking at least two full days (20+ hours) of driving through France and Spain, with the associated costs of tolls, fuel, and at least one overnight stay.
  • From Northern Europe (e.g., London/UK): The “fast” option is to take a ferry from Portsmouth to Santander or Bilbao in northern Spain (a journey that already takes 20-36 hours). From there, you have to drive another 8-10 hours (800-1,000 km) south to Huelva/Cádiz.

Stage 2: The Ocean Crossing (The Ferry)

Once you reach the port of Cádiz or Huelva, the second part of the journey begins. This isn’t a “ferry hop”; it’s a mini-cruise.

  • The Companies: The main routes are operated by Naviera Armas, Fred. Olsen Express, and Baleària.
  • The Duration: Prepare yourself mentally. The ferry journey from Spain to Tenerife lasts between 31 and 53 hours. That’s two days and one or two nights at sea.
  • The Costs: This is the painful part. Prices vary wildly, but to give you an idea:
A passenger with a car can expect to pay from €300 and up, but the average is often higher.
To this, you must add the cost of a sleeping cabin, which is almost essential for such a long journey and can add another €300-€600 to the total.

In total, for a round trip, the entire journey (driving + ferry) can easily take 6-8 days of your time dedicated just to travel.

The Verdict: Who is This Trip For?

As confirmed by many guides, this type of journey is recommended only in two cases:

  1. If You Are Moving (Relocating): It’s the best way to bring your car and many personal belongings without the limits of a plane.
  2. If You Are Taking a “Long Holiday” (2-3 months): If you plan to spend the entire winter in Tenerife, the cost and time are amortized.

For a cyclist with one week of vacation, this trip is logistically and financially unsustainable.

The Smart Alternative: Fly, Rent, and Ride

Why waste a week traveling when you could already be in the saddle? The solution for 99% of cyclists is infinitely simpler, cheaper, and faster:

  1. Fly (4-5 hours): Take a convenient flight to Tenerife South Airport (TFS).
  2. Rent a Car: Pick up a rental car directly at the airport for maximum flexibility.
  3. Rent the Right Bike: Come to us. Instead of risking your own bike on a long journey, rent a high-end carbon bike, perfectly serviced and ready to climb Teide.

Combining a rental car for “civilian” transport and a high-quality rental bike for your rides is the winning strategy. It costs you less, saves you precious vacation days, and removes all logistical stress.
