Thinking about organizing a cycling camp in Tenerife? Excellent choice. The island is the undisputed European capital of winter training (and beyond).
But planning a trip to a new place, especially a volcanic island with so many variables, inevitably raises questions. “Will it be too hard?” “What should I bring?” “Where do I stay?”
We’ve gathered the 8 most frequently asked questions (FAQs) we receive from cyclists like you, with clear, direct answers to help you plan a stress-free and unforgettable camp.
The 8 Fundamental Questions about Cycling in Tenerife
1. What is the best time of year to come?
Although Tenerife is a 365-day destination, the high season for cycling camps is from October to April. The reason is simple: while continental Europe is cold and rainy, the south coast of Tenerife enjoys average temperatures of 20-24°C and almost guaranteed sunshine. It’s the perfect time to build your winter base, just like the World Tour pros do.
2. Where is the best place to stay? North or South?
Short answer: The South. For a cyclist, the area of Costa Adeje, Los Cristianos, and Playa de las Américas is the perfect strategic base.
- Climate: It’s the “dry” and sunny side of the island. The north is greener but also more prone to clouds and rain in winter.
- Logistics: You are literally at the foot of the main and most beautiful climbs to Teide (from Vilaflor, Chío, Guía de Isora).

3. Should I bring my own bike or rent one?
This is the main dilemma. Bringing your own bike involves airline fees (often €100-€150 round trip), the stress of packing, and the risk of damage. We recommend renting a high-end bike here. The advantages:
- Zero stress at the airport.
- High-quality carbon bikes (like the ones we offer) are ready to go.
- Correct Gearing: Our rental bikes are equipped with climb-friendly gears (e.g., 11-32), perfect for Teide, which your “flat-land” bike might not have.
4. Is it really that hard? Are the climbs only for pros?
Tenerife is famous for Teide, a 40-50 km climb. It’s long and challenging, but it’s not reserved for professionals. It’s a climb with steady gradients (5-7%) but never extreme. If your training is lacking or you’re worried, the solution is a road E-Bike. It allows you to do the exact same ride as your fitter friends, enjoying the scenery without “bonking”. It’s not cheating; it’s using the right tool.

5. What should I pack? (Clothing)
The number one mistake is bringing only summer clothing. In Tenerife, you dress in layers. You can start from the coast at 25°C and arrive on Teide at 8°C (or less!). The hour-long descent can be freezing. Essentials: A good summer kit, a technical base layer, and, always in your pocket, a windproof gilet and arm warmers.
6. Is it safe to ride on Tenerife’s roads?
Yes, Tenerife is a very safe place for cyclists. Drivers, especially locals, are used to seeing pros and amateurs all year round and are generally very respectful (the 1.5-meter passing rule is widely observed). That said, safety also depends on you: use lights in the (many) tunnels, be careful in roundabouts, and don’t take anything for granted on the long, fast descents.
7. Do I really need a guide, or can I go solo with a GPS?
You can go solo, but joining a guided tour improves the experience 100%.
- Navigation: GPS apps and smartphones drain batteries, and in many gorges (barrancos) and on Teide, the 4G/GPS signal disappears.
- Support: A guide (or a support vehicle) means peace of mind. For a flat tire, a mechanical issue, or a hunger bonk, you have immediate help.
- Secret Routes: A guide takes you on the best roads, knows the cafes with the best coffee (and where to refill bottles), and knows which roads to avoid based on the time of day and wind.
8. Is it only for road biking, or is there MTB too?
Tenerife is a paradise for Mountain Biking, and it’s often underestimated! The Corona Forestal park, the ring of Canary pine trees surrounding Teide, is crisscrossed by hundreds of kilometers of epic dirt tracks and singletrack, with breathtaking views of the volcano and the ocean.
