Which are the best cycling routes in Canary Islands?

Gran Canaria

If you like climbs and long routes, then Gran Canaria is your island. The Gran Tour de Gran Canaria is a classic for lovers of challenging climbs, with its 220 km and 5,000 metres of altitude difference. Usually, it takes around 6 days to complete it, and you will cycle epic roads, all around the mountainous island of Gran Canaria.

Tenerife

If you like the volcanic landscape, then Tenerife is your Island! The Teide by bike is an unmissable experience for daredevil cyclists: 60 km and 2,500 metres of altitude difference to conquer Spain’s highest volcano. The summit of the Teide Volcano (3718 m) is the highest point in Spain and the highest point above the sea level in the Atlantic islands. Ride on Teide National Park, named World Heritage Site by UNESCO, and enjoy your cycling holidays!

Lanzarote

Lanzarote is also very wild, and with a landscape similar to Tenerife. Here you will be able to cycle the Timanfaya Bike routes, that will take you on a discovery of Lanzarote’s lunar volcanic landscapes, including volcanic cones and lava flows. You will start from the center of Yaiza, and cycle for 31km. Then you will visit the Timanfaya National Park, and the wine region of La Geria.

La Gomera

La Gomera is the perfect island for cycling routes in the Canary Islands, with scenic routes through forests, villages and cultivated terraces. Here you will find a little over 110 km of quiet roads surrounded by spectacular scenery and a warm climate enabling them to be enjoyed at any time of year.

El Hierro

Last but not least, the smallest of the Canary Islands: El Hierro.

Even if it’s area is small, this island offers a challenging but rewarding route with steep climbs and ocean views as far as the eye can see. You can start from Valverde, located in the northeast. Once you are in the farming village of San Andrés, take the HI-4 road to the junction which leads to La Hoya del Morcillo and the intact landscape of El Julan, one of the places which makes El Hierro so special. It is a slope covered with pine trees where only the hermitage of the Virgen de los Reyes (Blessed Virgin of King of Kings) and the lighthouse at Orchilla remind us the place is inhabited.
